I can’t open a floppy disk

Cause: If you followed the steps in the previous Headache but still cannot open a floppy disk, there are a few possible explanations:
  • The floppy drive has failed.
  • The disk is formatted for an unsupported operating system, such as for the Macintosh Operating System (Mac OS).
  • The disk is corrupt.

To solve the problem, try the following:
  • First, try a different disk in the floppy drive to see if the floppy drive is working. If it is not, try restarting the computer. If the floppy drive still does not work, you’ll need to get help from your computer manufacturer’s technical support.
  • If the floppy drive works on other disks, you can try to open the disk again. If this does not work, the disk is probably corrupt or there is some mechanical problem with the disk or disk drive. You can try to reformat the disk so that you can use it, but this will destroy all data on the disk.
